Hello!
It's been a while since the last review I wrote on this blog. And now I'm back with a review of a sheet mask from Sulwhasoo!
The interesting claim from this Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask is about the JAUM Balancing Complex™, which is designed to improve skin balance. I guess I need to try this formula since I have an oily-combi skin. I have very dry patches on cheek area but my T-zone is very oily. Yes, I need to balance it, right?
They also claim the essence of this mask was made by precious Korean herbal ingredients, and we all know that mostly Korean herbal products work very very well. But, is that true? Do not waste our time and let’s find out if I agree with those reviewers who give it a high score, or otherwise?

REVIEW
I notice that Sulwhasoo always comes in exclusive, classy yet elegant packages. This brand seems to always bring a Korean traditional theme in their package. It reminds me of Sageuk (Korean historical dramas) I watched, haha. Maybe because they used Hanja (Chinese characters) to write the brand name on the package.
This mask comes in an ordinary square pocket, a package that you usually get from a sheet mask. It is designed very very simple with yellowish color theme, showing a luxurious and elegant look. For a person who loves cute things, like me, it is actually quite boring. But this product is so photogenic, LOL. It looks very adorable in the photos (doesn’t mean that my photos are that great, but just take a look at the mask, it’s stunning!).
Instruction for how to use the product are clearly written in English and Korean on the back side, but the ingredients list is not there. I had to go to the website to find it, and that was my first time landed on Sulwhasoo’s website, haha. Fortunately, they give me a complete information about this mask on their website, this is so helpful.
I must say Sulwhasoo did a great job by using a thick material for the package. The plastic is very thick and sturdy. But the downside, it is a bit hard to rip the pocket apart. Make sure you use your enough power when do that. Ah, we can ask a help from our scissors, though, haha. So, it is actually not a matter that will decrease its rating.
The first thing I noticed after opening the pocket was the scent of this mask. It has a strong natural herbal scent. Yes, it’s quite strong for my nose and I was like, “Oh how could I bear with this while wearing the mask?” It smells like a lemongrass (or ginger?) with hint of orange scent. I don’t know what’s in the ingredients list that smells like lemongrass because I think they did not use lemongrass.
The sheet was placed very neatly inside the pocket and there was a thick net that protected it. Since I had other experience from a sheet mask that came along with an outer net (read my Tonymoly Panda’s Dream Eye Patch review), so this is not an odd thing. The outer net is somewhat stiff and however it helps us to unfold and place the sheet easier to our face.
The sheet itself is thick. Yes, it is absolutely thick, especially if I compare this sheet with the other sheet masks I tried (like Innisfree My Real Squeeze Mask and Etude House Air Therapy Mask). The size is slightly bigger and wider on its bottom part, but still tolerable. The sheet also has big pores. I could see the pores very clearly. It’s big like mine, LOL. I don’t know if it’s supposed to deliver the essense better or what, but I did not have any problem nor felt something special with that.
The surface of the sheet is smooth and it clings perfectly on my face. Though the sheet is thick but it’s not heavy at all. So far I had no major complaint, even though I still wish it had thinner size. Meanwhile, I think my nose adapted quite quickly with its herbal scent because it did not bother me anymore and it completely disappeared after the essence absorbed into my skin.
At first, when I took out the sheet, I found it was in a yellowish color and looked dull. Apparently it was caused by the essence which has a gold-yellowish color. This essence reminds me of BRTC Vitalizer C-10 Ampoule, both have similar color. But don’t worry it will not leave yellow stain on skin as it becomes colorless once completely absorbed.
The claim said that this mask contains 1/3 of a bottle of First Care Activating Serum EX, which I guessed much essence adhered very well on the sheet because the remain essence in the pocket was not that a lot. The essence itself has a runny and lightweight gel-like consistency. At first, the essence felt a bit sticky when I patted it on my skin but afterwards it became alright once absorbed completely in few seconds.
I don’t know if you agree with me or not, but due to my skincare journey, I learned that low-end (drugstore) products usually leave moist effect only on the surface of our skin. The medium-end products will moisturize deeper than the low-end products. Meanwhile, the high-end products will work through the deepest layer of our skin. Seems like your skin is moisturized from within, thus it will last longer too. And yass, this mask did like that!
I really love that the essence from Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask worked extremely great to my skin. First effect I got was my skin felt very supple, moist and soft (literally very ssoofftt!!!). The surface of my skin became smoother too, even on the dehydrated and rough pathces. This mask hydrated and cleaned my skin and minimized some pores as well.
Honestly the brightening effect is so so, I mean it brightened up my skin but not that awesome. Surprisingly, it worked so well on my redness. It soothed the redness thus my skintone looked more even, fresh and radiant. My skin looked very moist and healthy, but the glowing effect is not that much. There was no too glowy or shiny look on my skin but as I said, the moist effect was in the deepest layer of my skin. Hence though my skin was moistened, it did not leave greasy feeling nor make my T-zone more oily.
Mostly, sheet masks give an instant smooth and moist effect after used and it only lasts for a day. But this mask gives me more amazing result, seriously. The soft and moist effect last about 3 days on my skin. Moreover, it did not cause any breakout but otherwise it helped to dry some pimples faster. Oh, I love this!
